Star
As a symbol, a star has many meanings. It can represent: the presence of a divinity (cf. the story of the Magi: a star indicated where Christ was); supremacy; the eternal; the undying; hope; angelic messenger of God; eyes of the night; divine guidance and favor; birth of Christ. Stars can also be symbols of hope and idealism, light and spirituality.
The star is a potent symbol with meanings that span cultures and millennia:
Divine Guidance and Hope Stars represent navigation, direction, and guidance through darkness. They've literally guided travelers for centuries and symbolize finding one's way or following a higher purpose - like the Star of Bethlehem leading the wise men.
Aspiration and Achievement Stars symbolize excellence, ambition, and reaching for the highest goals. We "reach for the stars," call exceptional people "stars," and award stars for outstanding performance. They represent the pinnacle of achievement.
The Divine and Celestial Realm Across religions and mythologies, stars represent divine presence, heavenly beings, or the realm of gods. Many deities are associated with stars, and they often symbolize the eternal or transcendent.
Light in Darkness Stars embody hope, inspiration, and illumination - they shine in the darkest night, representing the persistence of light even in difficult times. They suggest that even small lights can pierce darkness.
Cosmic Order and Destiny Stars have long been associated with fate, destiny, and cosmic patterns. Astrology is built on this symbolism, with stars believed to influence human affairs and reveal one's path.
Different Star Forms
- Five-pointed star: humanity (four limbs plus head), balance between elements, protection
- Six-pointed star: union of opposites (masculine/feminine, heaven/earth), particularly sacred in Judaism
- Seven-pointed star: mysticism, the seven days, seven planets of ancient astronomy
- Eight-pointed star: regeneration, infinity, various goddess traditions
Multiplicity and Infinite Possibility The countless stars represent abundance, infinite potential, and the vastness of existence.
In the Tarot decks, the XVII-th card of the Major Arcana is the Star. It is a symbol of glory, of radiating harmony, balance and achievement.
