Tower

As a symbol, the tower represents ascent; vigilance; enclosed space; inaccessible; virginity; feminine sheltering. It also is a phallic symbol.

Towers carry powerful and varied symbolic meanings across different contexts:

Ambition and achievement - Towers reaching skyward represent human aspiration, the desire to transcend earthly limitations, and monumental accomplishments. They symbolize striving toward higher goals or spiritual elevation.

Isolation and separation - Towers can represent withdrawal from the world, whether voluntary (like a hermit's retreat) or forced (imprisonment). The figure trapped in a tower appears in countless fairy tales, symbolizing loneliness or being cut off from life below.

Power and dominance - Historically, towers served defensive and surveillance purposes, making them symbols of authority, control, and watching over territory. They represent strategic advantage and the ability to see threats coming.

Spiritual connection - Religious towers like minarets, bell towers, and stupas serve as bridges between earth and heaven, representing prayer, divine communication, and the human reach toward the sacred.

Disruption and catastrophe - The Tower card in tarot depicts sudden upheaval, destruction of false structures, and necessary collapse. The Tower of Babel represents hubris and the failure of overambitious human projects.

Knowledge and enlightenment - Towers as libraries, observatories, or lighthouses symbolize accumulated wisdom, clarity of vision, and guidance. They represent elevated perspective and intellectual achievement.

Rigidity and structure - The tower's solid, vertical form can represent inflexibility, established order, or institutions that resist change—for better or worse.

The tower's meaning often depends on whether you're viewing it from inside (isolation, perspective) or outside (aspiration, obstacle), and whether it's being built up or falling down.

Card XVI of the Major Arcana (Tarot Decks): tower of destruction: destruction of what is no longer useful.
