Tree
The tree symbolizes the whole of manifestation. It is the synthesis of heaven, earth and water. It is rooted in the depth of the Earth, while the branches reach into the heavens and eternity. It represents dynamic life; nourishing, sheltering, supporting.
Sometimes the roots of a tree can be a symbol of the Underworld.
Common meanings:
Life and growth - Trees represent the cycle of life itself—birth, growth, death, and renewal through the seasons. They symbolize vitality, fertility, and the organic unfolding of existence.
Connection between realms - With roots deep in the earth and branches reaching skyward, trees symbolize the connection between the underworld, earthly realm, and heavens. The World Tree or Cosmic Tree appears in Norse, Hindu, Mayan, and many other mythologies as the axis connecting all dimensions of reality.
Family and ancestry - The "family tree" metaphor reflects how trees symbolize lineage, heritage, and the branching connections between generations. Roots represent ancestors while branches represent descendants.
Knowledge and wisdom - From the Biblical Tree of Knowledge to the Bodhi tree under which Buddha achieved enlightenment, trees represent insight, learning, and spiritual awakening. Their long lives make them witnesses to history and carriers of memory.
Strength and resilience - Trees withstand storms, adapt to conditions, and persist through centuries, making them symbols of endurance, stability, and the ability to weather life's challenges while remaining rooted.
Shelter and nourishment - Trees provide shade, fruit, wood, and oxygen—symbolizing generosity, protection, and sustaining life. They represent abundance and the giving nature of the earth.
Individuality within unity - Each tree is unique yet part of a forest ecosystem, symbolizing both individual identity and interconnectedness. The hidden network of roots below ground represents unseen connections between seemingly separate beings.
Transformation - The seasonal cycle of deciduous trees symbolizes death and rebirth, letting go and renewal, and the natural rhythms of change.
