Veil

As a symbol, a veil represents pre-dawn; the pre-enlightened state; darkness giving way to light; hidden or esoteric knowledge; secrecy; ignorance; protective; modesty or chastity.

Common meanings as a symbol:

Mystery and the Hidden: Veils conceal what lies beneath, symbolizing secrets, mysteries, or truths not yet revealed. "Lifting the veil" means discovering hidden knowledge or seeing reality clearly for the first time.

Sacred Boundaries: In religious traditions, veils mark the boundary between the sacred and profane, the divine and human. The temple veil in Jewish tradition separated the Holy of Holies; its tearing symbolized direct access to God.

Death and the Afterlife: The "veil between worlds" represents the thin barrier separating life from death, the material from the spiritual realm. Crossing this veil means passing into the unknown.

Modesty and Privacy: Veils protect privacy and maintain modesty, symbolizing restraint, humility, or the choice to keep parts of oneself protected from public view.

Transition and Transformation: Wedding veils mark the bride's passage from one state to another. The lifting of the veil represents revealing one's true self or entering a new phase of life.

Illusion and Deception: A veil can symbolize illusion—the "veil of Maya" in Hindu philosophy represents the illusions that prevent us from seeing ultimate reality. What appears real may be merely surface appearance.

Mourning and Grief: Black mourning veils symbolize sorrow, withdrawal from society, and the shadowy state of bereavement.
