Frequency
"Matter is vibrating energy. Different vibratory rates denote the properties of matter. Frequency is the rate at which molecules or consciousness vibrates." (Lyssa Royal & Keith Priest, The Prism of Lyra)
Frequencies and altered states of consciousness
Brainwave activity is measured using an electroencephalogram (EEG) and can be categorized into different frequency bands, each corresponding to distinct states of consciousness. These brainwave frequencies are associated with various mental states, ranging from relaxed wakefulness to deep sleep and altered states of consciousness.
These are the main brainwave frequency bands and their associated states:
Beta Waves (12-30 Hz):
- Beta waves are dominant during normal waking consciousness and active thinking.
- They are associated with alertness, focused attention, problem-solving, and active mental engagement.
- Higher beta activity may indicate stress or anxiety.
Alpha Waves (8-12 Hz):
- Alpha waves are present when we are in a relaxed but awake state, such as during meditation or when our eyes are closed but not asleep.
- They are associated with a calm and peaceful mental state, increased creativity, and reduced stress.
- Alpha waves are often observed in a state of "restful alertness."
Theta Waves (4-8 Hz):
- Theta waves are present during deep relaxation, meditation, daydreaming, and light sleep (e.g., stage 1 and stage 2 sleep).
- They are associated with vivid imagery, increased intuition, and access to subconscious thoughts and memories.
- Theta waves are often linked to the experience of hypnagogic states just before falling asleep or waking up.
Delta Waves (0.5-4 Hz):
- Delta waves are the slowest brainwave frequency and are typically observed during deep sleep (e.g., stages 3 and 4 of non-REM sleep).
- They are associated with restorative sleep, physical healing, and unconscious processing of information.
- Delta waves are crucial for overall rejuvenation and regeneration of the body and mind.
Gamma Waves (above 30 Hz):
- Gamma waves are the fastest brainwave frequency and are associated with high-level cognitive processing and intense focus.
- They have been linked to moments of insight, peak performance, and heightened consciousness.
- Gamma waves are not always present but are observed in specific cognitive tasks or during meditation by experienced practitioners.
In altered states of consciousness, such as during deep meditation, hypnosis, or under the influence of certain psychoactive substances, the balance and intensity of these brainwave frequencies can shift. For example, experienced meditators may exhibit increased alpha and theta wave activity, indicating deeper states of relaxation and focus. However, it is essential to note that the study of brainwave activity in altered states of consciousness is complex, and more research is needed to fully understand the neurophysiological basis of these experiences.
Frequencies and subtle matter / energy
The concept of frequencies is also closely related to the ideas of subtle matter and subtle energy, which are found in certain belief systems and alternative philosophies, particularly in various Eastern spiritual traditions and some holistic healing practices. Not surprisingly, these concepts are not part (yet?) of mainstream Western scientific understanding.
Subtle Matter:
- Subtle matter is a (hypothetical) form of matter that is believed to exist beyond the scope of ordinary physical perception.
- It is considered to be more refined and subtle than the ordinary matter that we can interact with using our five senses and modern scientific instruments.
- Subtle matter is often thought to underlie and interact with the physical world, affecting physical processes and phenomena.
- In some belief systems, it is suggested that subtle matter is responsible for consciousness and spiritual experiences.
Subtle Energy:
- Subtle energy, also referred to as life force, prana (in yoga), chi or qi (in Chinese traditions), and other names in various cultures, is believed to be a type of energy that animates living beings and is associated with vital life functions.
- This energy is considered to flow through specific pathways in the body (e.g., meridians in Traditional Chinese Medicine) and can be balanced or manipulated to support health and well-being.
- Subtle energy is often associated with the concept of energy centers or chakras in certain spiritual practices.
Now, where frequencies come into play:
In some belief systems and holistic healing approaches, it is suggested that subtle matter and subtle energy can manifest at different frequencies. These frequencies may be described as vibrations, oscillations, or waves of energy, similar to how brainwave frequencies are described. Practitioners and proponents of these concepts may claim that different states of consciousness, health, and well-being are related to specific frequencies of subtle energy.
For example, practices like meditation, yoga, and energy healing modalities often aim to influence or balance the subtle energy flow in the body. Some practitioners might refer to the movement or manipulation of this energy as raising its frequency or attuning it to a particular resonance.
