Third Eye
"The 'psychic' eye located in the middle of the forehead and between the eyebrows. Also the location of the sixth chakra. A connection to spiritual energy that can be activated by meditation and awareness. Produces second sight and extrasensory perception. The inner Eye of God." (SJA)
The third eye, also called the "shining spot," or "flaming pearl," in the centre of the forehead, symbolizes unity, balance. It is a symbol of seeing things whole. It's deliverance from duality; transcendent wisdom, crystallization of light; spiritual consciousness, enlightenment.
Common meanings as a symbol:
The Third Eye is a potent symbol with deep roots in Eastern spiritual traditions that has since spread widely into global consciousness.
Inner vision and intuition forms the core meaning. Located in the center of the forehead, the Third Eye represents a mode of perception beyond ordinary sight—the ability to see what is hidden, to perceive truth beneath appearances, and to access intuitive knowledge that bypasses rational analysis.
Spiritual awakening and enlightenment is closely related. In Hindu and Buddhist traditions, the Third Eye (associated with the Ajna chakra) represents higher consciousness and the awakening of spiritual faculties. When "opened," it symbolizes transcendence of illusion and direct perception of reality as it truly is. Shiva is often depicted with a Third Eye that, when opened, can destroy ignorance—or the universe itself.
Unity and transcendence of duality is another layer. The two physical eyes see the world of opposites—light and dark, self and other, good and evil. The Third Eye perceives beyond these dualities, recognizing underlying oneness. It symbolizes the integration of opposing forces and the transcendence of limited, binary thinking.
Wisdom and discernment follow naturally. The Third Eye represents the capacity to see through deception, to distinguish truth from falsehood, and to perceive the deeper significance of events and experiences.
The pineal gland has become associated with the Third Eye in more modern interpretations, linking this ancient symbol to a physical structure in the brain, though this connection is more metaphorical than scientific.
Clairvoyance and psychic ability is the meaning most emphasized in contemporary spiritual and New Age contexts—extrasensory perception, visions, and access to hidden knowledge.
