Exosociology

Exosociology is an emerging academic field that studies the potential social, political, and psychological consequences of first contact with extraterrestrial intelligence.

Exosociology extends sociology to extraterrestrial societies. It asks questions such as how an extraterrestrial society might be structured, how social institutions could evolve, how individuals might relate to groups, how conflict and cooperation could operate, and how civilizations might organize themselves.

There is obviously a much larger speculative component here than in conventional sociology. Nevertheless, sociology can provide legitimate theoretical tools for constructing models of possible extraterrestrial civilizations.

It also connects naturally with SETI. Detectable technological activity implies not merely individual intelligence but, in many scenarios, some degree of social organization and collective technological capability.
