On June
3rd, 2024, just after 5 PM, we were unexpectedly hit by a severe tornado. See, e.g., https://www.iol.co.za/capetimes/news/othongathi-tornado-rated-ef3-are-tornadoes-common-in-sa-f3f7912a-ddb4-4919-a803-1fc391575df1
Within
minutes, heavy damages were inflicted on our home. Several glass doors and
windows were destroyed. The whole upstairs was badly damaged. (See video below, filmed the morning after).
This is what the upstairs looked like, the morning after the tornado struck.
Many doors and windows were shattered, and the equipment in the rooms was destroyed.
The wind was so strong that balustrades were ripped out and shattered. Even the paint and waterproofing outside were ripped off.
The
insurance we have covers water damage, not wind / tornado damage.
The quotes for
the repairs are in, and amount to the equivalent of approximately $13 500.
(The quotes are in ZAR).
We need to
Most doors and windows were shattered. These photos show but a few.
(Click on any image to get the full photo).
These costs
do not even include the damage done inside the house, where, e.g., a laptop, two computer monitors, a classical concert guitar, etc. were destroyed as well.
The
priority is fixing the broken doors and windows, then waterproofing the roof,
next the outside walls, replacing the balustrades, and finally painting the
house again.
$13 500
is more than we can afford at this moment.
So, we need your help.
Raised thus far (29 June - 6 September 2024): $6 576 of $13 500.
